In a previous life I ran a tugboat pretty much every day. My job was to move tons of raw materials--sand, crushed rock, oyster shell--by the barge load. Barge? Think of a big steel box 200 feet long and 50 feet wide. Fill 'er up.
In this photo I am looking from the helm of a pusher tug over the barge. I am steering to follow the curve of the river and not hit any of the boats or houseboats tied to the shore. As you can see, it was lovely California morning. Just 4000 tons of rock out for a ride....
